Zine Workshop: Not a Cupcake by Nina Prader :: 18th March at 18h

Zine Workshop: Not a Cupcake by Nina Prader

A zine is a radical piece of paper.
Suffragettes used printed flyers to spread the word about women’s lib.
DIY riot girrrls used paper booklets as a megaphone for creative manifestos.
A medium to dissent, inform, and play.
Learn how to make a simple book from one piece of paper and some basic book making techniques from glueing, printing, to distribution.
Tools and materials will be provided. Bring your ideas.
By the end you will be ready to start your own D.I.Y. press at home, at work and with friends.

“Cupcakes are a recent economic, cultural, and social phenomenon and dare I say symbol of our times”
-Cupcake Rant 2011

A zine about the current cupcake craze turned into a  ghost-store installation resurfaces on Sechshauserstraße, promising cupcakes of a different sort, behind the door:  Mz Baltazar’s Laboratory.

Inspired by the international economic phenomena of guerilla cupcake bakeries and concept stores that pop-up -also- in Vienna, Vitrine showcased an installation-illustration of the visual narratives and intricacies behind the spongey facade of the cupcake industry: The many symbolic shapes this pastry takes from personifications to hidden economic and gendered ideologies, ranging from serious to absurd. -mostly absurd- In March, Cupcake Store will pop-up again at Mz. Baltazars even further down the gentrified street at Sechshauserstrasse.

And: The museum, biotope, and dysfunctional store invite to a zine-making workshop on the 18th of March.

Mz Baltazar’s Laboratory
is a weekly event taking place in Vienna (Austria), specifically for persons who call themselves women or trans. If you love to make things, rather than consuming them, meet up at Mz Baltazar‘s to share your skills. Mz Baltazar‘s participants come from different backgrounds, ages and mindsets to exchange equipement, build circuits, play with DIY electronics and interactive art. We encourage each other to learn new tools and collaborate. All workshops are free in order to offer a fearless, accessible plattform to tinker with male connotated toys. The artwork created at Mz Baltazar‘s Laboratory is generated with Open Source Soft- and Hardware. We see the process of demythifying technology as a fun way to articulate ourselves and become creative.

OutSight (O.K.O)
The art group OutSight was founded by Franziska Faust, Lena Violetta Leitner, Lena Marinova und Steffi Neuhuber in Octobre 2010 to avoid the existing traditional hierarchies in theatre and cultural activities. It is very important for OutSight to collaborate with women from different fields, so that a network is being created that inforces
women to express themselves in an artistic way. OutSight experiments with media art, music, dance and performance and therefore creates multidisciplinary works (installations, performances, concerts, videos). Recurrent topics are reflections about ideals in the society and heteronomy.

Anna T. “Opaque Spaces of Language” Screening & Discussion :: 28th Jan :: 18h

10945576_773122972762688_8080117807404879759_n

Anna T. “Opaque Spaces of Language” Screening & Discussion :: 28th Jan :: 18h
at Mz. Baltazars Laboratory

Anna T. is a multidisciplinary artist researching queer subjectivities, language, and performativity. In this presentation she will be exploring aspects of privacy, communication, and performativity in the form of sub-cultural (queer) slangs and ideas of kinship and group membership that derive from them.

The languages are explored through ideas of passive resistance, opacity, and embodied performances, drawing from J. D. Katz, E. Glissant, and N. DeVilliers, and pose questions on the mechanisms of concealment, exclusion, and community formation, that seem to intersect them.

The 20 minute video deals with issues of physical space and the notional space language constructs. Sound becomes then a protagonist taking the viewers through spaces empty of bodies, creating parallel narratives.
