The exhibition „Future Female*“ will show two Austrian-based and two New Zealand-
based artists: Anna Holtz, Signe Rose, Juliet Carpenter and Joanna Neumegen. The artists show recent or previously unexhibited work in various media representing their respective artistic practices often touching on aspects of gender studies and operating with digital technology. The title of the show makes reference to the slogan „The future is female“ written on so many t-shirts of mainstream clothing chains sparking a debate of what is helpful for a movement and what might reduce it to a harmless fashion statement; but also raises the question of what will be perceived and lived as female, or remain of that category in the future indicated by the asterisk in the title. The group show brings together four female artists I highly admire for their practice, their approach, the questions they raise and their self-image.

The Ausstellung “Future Female*”vereint zwei Künstlerinnen aus Österreich und zwei aus Neuseeland: Anna Holtz, Signe Rose, Juliet Carpenter und Joanna Neumegen. Es werden neuere oder noch nie gezeigte Arbeiten ausgestellt, die repräsentativ für die jeweilige künstlerische Praxis sind, Aspekte von Genderstudies aufgreifen und digitale Technologien verwenden. Der Titel der Ausstellung bezeiht sich auf den Slogan „The future is female“ der auf so vielen tshirts von Modeketten zu finden ist und eine Diskussion in Gang gesetzt hat, was für eine Bewegung hilfreich ist und was ihr schadet oder sie auf harmlose Ebene reduziert. Auch wird durch das Sternchen im Titel die Frage aufgeworfen, was in Zukunft als „weiblich“ empfunden und gelebt werden wird. Die Gruppenausstellung zeigt vier Künstlerinnen die ich für ihr Selbstverständnis, ihre künstlerische Praxis und ihre Ansätze bewundere.

About the artists and curator
Juliet Carpenter is an artist from New Zealand who works predominantly in video and animation. Recent works have focused on how the biopolitical female body is constructed through film and how technologies of nature and industry effect the theatre of personhood through language. Carpenter strives to share agency in the production of these videos, often collaborating with other artists and writers. She studied at the Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, New Zealand where she graduated in 2013. Since then she has been working as a software developer and exhibiting regularly in Australia and New Zealand.
Juliet Carpenter ist eine Künstlerin aus Neuseeland. Sie arbeite vor allem mit Video und Animation. Kürzlich entstandene Arbeiten konzentrieren sich auf das biopolitische Konstrukt des weiblichen Körpers im Film und darauf wie Technologien der Natur und Industrie durch Sprache das Theater des Mensch-Seins affektieren. Caprenter teilt die Autorschaft in ihren Videoarbeiten oft mit anderen KünstlerInnen und Schriftstellern. Sie studierte an der Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland, (NZ) von der sie 2013 den Abschluss bekam. Seitdem arbeitet sie als Softwareentwicklerin und stellt regelmäßig in Australien und Neuseeland aus.

Anna Holtz was born in Stuttgart (DE) in 1982. She has studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and Vienna. Recent exhibitions include presentations at Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Skulpturinstitut Wien and her graduation show at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Anna Holtz wurde 1982 in Stuttgart (DE) geboren. Sie studierte an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart und Wien. Ihre Arbeiten wurden zuletzt in der Kunsthalle Exnergasse, dem Skulpturinstitut Wien und im Zusammenhang ihrer Diplompräsentation an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Wien gezeigt.

Auckland born and Melbourne based artist Joanna Neumegen works within a rich artistic practice that moves between writing, mark making and installation. Using biomythology as a foregrounding aspect of her practice, her work encompasses personal narratives framed in their relationship to myth, history and biography.
Recent exhibitions include Dirt Future (2017) Artspace, Auckland, Destinys Fist (2017) Suicidal Oil Piglet Gallery, Melbourne, Passionate Instincts (2016), Christchurch.
Joanna Neumegen wurde in Auckland (NZ) geboren und lebt in Melbourne (AU). Ihre vielschichtige künstlerische Praxis fluktuiert zwischen Schriftstellerei, Malerei und Installation. Im Kontext von Biomythologie setzt sie in ihrer Kunstproduktion persönliche Narrative in Zusammenhang mit Mythos, Geschichte und Biographie.
Ausstellungsbeteiligungen gab es zuletzt bei Dirt Future (2017) Artspace, Auckland, Destinys Fist (2017) Suicidal Oil Piglet Gallery, Melbourne, Passionate Instincts (2016), Christchurch.

Signe Rose is an artist with roots in New Zealand and Vienna. Having graduated from both Elam School of Fine Arts in Auckland and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where she is currently based, the merging of these influences resounds in her work. Recent works were presented in the Vienna Biennale at MAK; at Tonus in Paris; with Minerva at Spring 1883 in Melbourne; with HHDM in New York, and at Michael Lett, Auckland.
Signe Rose hat Wurzeln in Neuseeland und Wien. Sie graduierte von der Elam School of Fine Art in Auckland und der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Wien, wo sie derzeit lebt. Die Einflüsse dieser beiden Bildungsstätten und Orte sind in ihrem Werk spürbar. Ihre Arbeiten wurden in letzter Zeit unter anderem auf der Vienna Biennale im MAK, bei Tonus in Paris, durch Minerva bei Spring 1883 in Melbourne, im HHDM in New York und bei Michael Lett, Auckland gezeigt.

Victoria Dejaco, Kunsthistorikerin, ist freischaffende Kuratorin, derzeit tätig als Sammlungsmanagerin der Stefan Stolitzka Privatstiftung in Graz. Seit 2011 realisierte sie Projekte und Ausstellungen in Österreich, Italien, der Schweiz, Bulgarien und Polen, während sie den Ausstellungsraum Hallway Gallery in Wien leitete (2011–2013) und als Galerieassistenz der Galerie Emanuel Layr arbeitete (2012–2014). 2013 zog sie nach Graz, um für zwei Jahre die Stelle der kuratorischen Assistenz des Grazer Kunstvereins zu übernehmen.
Victoria Dejaco, art historian, is a free-lance curator currently employed as collection manager of the Stefan Stolitzka Private Foundation in Graz. Since 2011 she has organized projects and exhibitions in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Poland while running her own exhibition space in Vienna (2011–2013) and working as gallery assistant for Galerie Emanuel Layr (2012–2014). 2013 she moved to Graz for the position of curatorial assistance at Grazer Kunstverein working there for two years.
